Why Every Apprentice Should Know Their Local's Business Agent

    Apprenticeship
The Business Agent is the most important person in your professional life as a union worker, and most apprentices don't introduce themselves until there is a problem. By then you are already in a difficult position, trying to build a relationship while also asking for something. Do it before you need anything. The BA is your union's representative in the field. They negotiate contracts with contractors, resolve grievances when they arise, manage the out-of-work list, and know every significant project coming to the jurisdiction before the general public does. They are also usually the person who has seen everything, knows everyone, and has a memory that goes back twenty years. The apprentice who walked up and said hello after a union meeting is remembered. The one who called in a panic because his per diem wasn't clearing is remembered differently. Walk up after a union meeting. Introduce yourself. Your name, your local, your craft, how long you've been in. That is all. Don't ask for anything. Don't pitch anything. Just make yourself a real person rather than a name on a list. Do that twice a year for the first three years of your apprenticeship and you will have built a relationship that matters when it's time to be dispatched to a job you actually want. The other thing most apprentices don't realize: the BA hears about problem contractors before the members do. They know which companies are late on per diem, which ones have been cited for safety violations, which ones are actively fighting the union on overtime interpretation. That information is worth more than any app or job board. The relationship is how you get access to it.
